Should you buy a shed or build your own?

Well, that depends.
If you’re good at understanding how things fit together, and you can picture in your mind what you’re trying to accomplish, then the answer may be no. You can probably just “wing it”. But again, you need to have an understanding of the underlaying structure should be, not just what the finished product will look like. This includes the shed doors, roof structure, shed ramp, windows, & lighting. Don’t forget you’ll also need to be a good judge of how much and exactly what materials you’re going to need.

Before you start to build your shed, make sure that you have considered this really important step.
1) Are there any restrictions placed by you homeowners association?
If you don’t have an HOA, then you should be pretty much free and clear to proceed with your shed plans. You may however, still need to check with city/county/etc.
there usually are certain restrictions on what and how you can build, and where you can place it (whatever IT may be…). Most HOA’s have some sort of pre-approval process. Of course, you can take your chances and hope no one notices or finds out. This may work just fine until you go to sell your home. That goes double for trying to skip by without a permit when one would be required. Do things the right way the first time. It’s worth your peace of mind. And in some cases, you won’t need approval or permits anyway.
Don’t think that you shouldn’t build your own shed just becuase you may be subject to the above steps.
Even if you buy a premade storage shed, the above may still apply. You’re still better off to build it yourself.
Is there anywhere I can get ready made plans for a brick shed for my garden? I need to send a drawing to my planning office but I can’t afford a designer to draw them.

I’ve always wanted to build a shed. Actually, I really want this for more than storage. I’ve seen so many really cool sheds that are turned into rec rooms. Wooden sheds sure aren’t what they used to be. I’ve seen so many people recently who are building sheds, not just for extra storage, but to create their own “playroom”. The possiblities are endless, and the costs are realitively low. There are a few things to figure out before you get started though. In some areas, you’ll have to check your local building codes, and restrictions. If you’re in a neighborhood, you’ll likely face other isuses also, unless, of course you can build below your fence line so neighbors aren’t able to see the roof over the top. I have an Arrow steel shed kit from Sears. They say to level the ground, but don’t say how to do this. I have a floor kit that is made of galvanized steel pieces that fit together with tabs. The plywood floor will screw into the steel base to be the floor of the shed. The ground is not even or level, I guess about 4 inches difference from the back to the front and by eye is level side to side.
Put some stakes along the perimeter (like 8 of them) such that they’re sticking out about a foot and are in very solidly. Then run some twine from one stake across to the opposite side and hang a line level (a level that clips onto the twine) on the twine. Adjust the height of the twine until the level reads zero bubble (dead level). Repeat this for the other three pairs of stakes. You will then have a plane of twines that are all dead level. You then measure the height of the twine from the ground at any point to determine how much dirt you have to remove from every location to make the ground flat and dead level.
